For the removal of all my faults and errors, and to please the Supreme Lord, I now resolve to perform this worship of Shri Ganapati.
Shodashopachara, the sixteen-step worship (installation day)
A home Ganpati sthapana, ready for the shodashopachara puja.
The sixteen steps below are the classical shodashopachara. Do them once, in order, on the day you install the idol. If your Ganesha lives at home all year and is worshipped daily, skip avahan and pratishthapana (steps 1 and 2) since he is already present; start from asana instead.
हे हेरम्ब त्वमेह्येहि ह्यम्बिकात्र्यम्बकात्मज । सिद्धिबुद्धिपते त्र्यक्ष गणाध्यक्ष प्रसीद मे ॥
he heramba tvamehyehi hyambikātryambakātmaja, siddhibuddhipate tryakṣa gaṇādhyakṣa prasīda me.
O Heramba, son of Ambika and the three-eyed Shiva, lord of Siddhi and Buddhi, please come; O three-eyed lord of the ganas, be gracious to me.
I have brought this panchamrit, milk, curd, ghee and honey, joined with sugar; please accept it for your bath.

नैवेद्यं गृह्यतां देव भक्तिं मे ह्यचलां कुरु । ईप्सितं मे वरं देहि परत्र च परां गतिम् ॥
naivedyaṃ gṛhyatāṃ deva bhaktiṃ me hyacalāṃ kuru, īpsitaṃ me varaṃ dehi paratra ca parāṃ gatim.
O Lord, accept this food offering, make my devotion unwavering, grant me what I wish, and the highest path hereafter.
Modak, said to be Ganesha's favourite, and never left out of the naivedya.
मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं गणाधिप । यत्पूजितं मया देव परिपूर्णं तदस्तु मे ॥
mantrahīnaṃ kriyāhīnaṃ bhaktihīnaṃ gaṇādhipa, yatpūjitaṃ mayā deva paripūrṇaṃ tadastu me.
O lord of the ganas, whatever I have worshipped that lacked the right mantra, ritual or devotion, let it still be complete, by your grace.
The daily puja, from day two to the last day before visarjan
What is enough for a busy home: one lamp, one aarti and one naivedya, morning and evening. That is the whole daily puja if a full shodashopachara every day is not realistic; nothing sacred is lost by keeping it this simple on a working day.
Uttar puja and visarjan

Eco-friendly visarjan: a clay (shadu mati) idol dissolves fully in plain water within a few hours; immerse it at home in a bucket or tub rather than a lake or the sea if that is easier, and use the dissolved clay as compost for a plant afterwards. A Plaster of Paris idol does not dissolve and should never go into a natural water body; check your local civic guidelines each year, since immersion rules can change.
What a family without a priest can skip: the exact wording of every mantra, a fixed muhurat down to the minute, and any step that needs equipment you do not have. What should not be skipped: the daily lamp and aarti, the modak naivedya, and asking forgiveness at the end. Devotion carries a home puja further than precision does.
