Azad Nagar Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti 61 Years of Faith, Tradition & Devotion Azad Nagar Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti was established in 1966 by blue-collared workers of Golden Tobacco Company, Tata Special Steel and Excel Industries Ltd., who had moved from Lalbaug–Parel and settled in Azad Nagar, M.H.B. Colony, Andheri West. The Ganeshotsav was initiated by dedicated community members, including Shri M. K. Menon, Shri Tukaram Salaskar and Shri Vasudev Kasalkar, along with other founding members. A significant milestone came in 1975, when the then Chairman, Shri Appa Khanvilkar, experienced the fulfilment of his wish through the blessings of Shri Ganpati. Since then, the life-size idol has been revered as “Navasala Pavnara Ganpati”, and over the years became popularly known across Mumbai as “Andhericha Raja.” Following the fulfilment of the devotees' prayers during a prolonged workers' strike, the Samiti began the unique tradition of immersing the life-size idol on Sankashti Day, five days after Anant Chaturdashi. The procession, which passes through Andheri village, has grown into a grand celebration attended by lakhs of devotees. The smaller Pooja idol continues to be immersed on Anant Chaturdashi, preserving the Samiti's traditional practices. Today, as Azad Nagar Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti enters its 61st year, it continues to uphold a legacy of faith, devotion, tradition and community spirit, cherished by generations of devotees.
