**The Ganga Came to England** Last year, the plan was simple. Varanasi first, then the climb to Kedarnath. We had talked about it for months — the boats at dawn, the smell of incense hanging over the water, the sound of a hundred bells at sunset. Then life did what life does. Work, dates that wouldn't line up, a window that closed before we could step through it. The trip never happened. For a while it sat with us as a small ache. The kind you don't announce, but you feel every time someone else posts a photo from the ghats. Then Ganeshotsav came around, and somewhere between the planning and the shopping lists, a thought landed: if we can't go to the Ganga, why not bring her here? It started as a sketch on the back of an envelope. Steps, a river, lamps, a small mandap for Bappa. By the second week it had taken over the living room. Cardboard everywhere. Paint on the carpet we swore we'd protect. Cutting, layering, measuring, arguing about whether the steps looked steep enough. Nothing was ordered in. Nothing was carried over from India in a suitcase. Every ghat step, every diya holder, every aarti thali — shaped by hand, here in England, by people who have never actually stood on those ghats but have seen them a thousand times in their heads. There were nights it looked like it wouldn't come together. A wall that wouldn't hold. Lights that flickered and died. The usual small defeats that decoration always brings. And then the evening came. The lamps went on, one by one. The aarti started. And for a few minutes, in a house in England, thousands of miles from Kashi, the river was real. The bells, the flames, the voices — all of it. We didn't reach Varanasi. Varanasi reached us. Bappa never asked how far we travelled. Only how much of ourselves we put into the welcome. गणपती बाप्पा मोरया 🙏🪔
